About Nonviolent Communication

About Nonviolent Communication (NVC)

NVC supports us to think, express ourselves and listen in a way that inspires compassion and connection. By honestly expressing our own feelings and needs and be able to confirm that we have understood the feelings and needs of the other person, we increase the chances to find a solution that meet everyone’s needs.

The process of Nonviolent Communication includes four steps: Observation, feeling, need and request.

Observation: Distinguish between what you see and hear and what you think and feel about it:
Observation versus judgment or analysis

Feeling: Expressing what you feel and distinguish it from your opinions and labels on others.
Feeling versus opinions and labels

Needs: Distinguish between your needs and what you’re thinking that you and others should or must do.
Need versus must or should

Request: Distinguish between a request that cares for the freedom of choice and a demand or a threat
Request versus demand or threat
